History

 In 2000, a retired minister, Rev John Hodgkinson, who had worked in the Far East and spoke Mandarin, founded a Chinese fellowship at Queen’s Hall Methodist Mission in Derby. After five years of growth, his death led to a significant decline.

 Supported by grants from the British and Hong Kong Methodist Churches, the Circuit appointed Revd Kok Kong Yap as a full-time ethnic Chinese minister from September 2009 to July 2019. During his tenure, the Chinese Fellowship grew in size and confidence, with 50-80 adults and 20-30 children attending weekly worship. The church offers Sunday services and several fellowship groups, such as women’s, young adults’, student fellowships, Bible study, and choirs.

The Chinese Church does not possess its own premises. Following the closure of Queen’s Hall in 2012, the congregation relocated initially to the Central United Reformed Church. Since October 2015, services have been held at Ashbourne Road Methodist/United Reformed Church.

After the retirement of Revd Kok Kong Yap in 2019, Revd Calvin Cheung was appointed to lead the Methodist Chinese community. He has served diligently across both the Derby Circuit and the Loughborough Circuit up to the present.
